Why 48 hours? The number isn't arbitrary. It comes from the constraints airlines put on hold-and-pay reservations and the timing pattern of consulate appointments.
What the airline allows
Airlines let third parties book a real PNR without payment, but only for a limited window. The standard hold for an unticketed booking is 24 to 72 hours, depending on the carrier and the fare class. Past that window, the booking is automatically purged from the system.
A 48-hour window sits inside almost every major carrier's allowed range. Anything longer would either fail on some routes or cost more because we'd have to use higher-tier fare classes that allow longer holds.
What applicants need
A consulate appointment is usually a single in-person session. The officer reviews the documents, asks questions, and either accepts the application that day or requests follow-ups. Whatever flight booking you submit needs to be valid at that appointment.
For a same-day order, 48 hours covers an appointment scheduled for tomorrow morning. For an order placed the night before, it covers a same-day morning appointment. That's the realistic window of need.
What about Schengen processing?
Schengen consulates take up to 15 calendar days to decide. Doesn't a 48-hour reservation fail this?
No. The reservation is checked at the moment of submission, not at the moment of decision. The officer looks up the booking when you hand over the documents. After that the reservation can lapse — the document has done its job.
This is well known to consular officers. They don't re-verify reservations at decision time, and they don't penalise applications where the reservation has expired between submission and decision.
When you might need longer
For visas that involve a phone or video interview a week after document submission, you may need a second reservation. We re-issue at no charge within 7 days of the original order — just reply to your confirmation email.
For long-stay visas (D-type) that require a paid ticket on the airline's actual booking system, a dummy ticket isn't the right tool. You need a confirmed paid ticket.
Frequently asked questions
Can I extend the validity window beyond 48 hours?
Not on a single reservation. We re-issue for free within 7 days of the original order to give you a second window if you need it.
Why does the reservation auto-expire instead of being explicitly cancelled?
The airline's reservation system handles the expiration automatically. We don't have to do anything — and neither do you.
